The Great Cold steps in...Spring

Like the effect of global warming, there is hardly a place left standing alone in the world. Even an alleyway in a small western town may be decorated with something interesting from remote eastern countries. Every day, the sun and the moon emerge in the sky alternatively, so do day and night. As many people know, the Lunar New Year for many eastern countries is as significant as Christmas for numerous western countries. But how about the solar terms?

The theory of Solar Terms still matters to farming, gardening, or even biology today, as the inherited lore of American farmers. In fact, there are 24 solar terms, which divide an entire lunar year into distinctive pieces.

In spring：

1. Lichun, or The Beginning of Spring， which is well known as The Spring Festival

2. Yushui, or The Rain Water

3. Jingzhe, or The Waking of Insects

4. Chunfen, or The Spring Equinox

5. Qingming, or the Tomb Sweeping Day

6. Guyu, or The Grain Rain

In summer:

7. Lixia, or The Beginning of Summer

8. Xiaoman, or The Grain Full

9. Mangzhong, or The Grain in Ear

10. Xiazhi, or The Summer Solstice

11. Xiaoshu, or The Slight Heat

12. Dashu, or The Great Heat

In Autumn:

13. Liqiu, or The Beginning of Autumn

14. Chushu, or The End of Heat

15. Bailu, or The White Dew

16. Qiufen, or The Autumn Equinox

17. Hanlu, or The Cold Dew

18. Shuangjiang, or The First Frost

In Winter:

19. Lidong, or The Beginning of Winter

20. Xiaoxue, or The Light Snow

21. Daxue, or The Great Snow

22. Dongzhi, or The Winter Solstice

23. Xiaohan, or The Slight Cold

24. Dahan, or The Great Cold

This originated in China, and has since propagated to many other Asian countries. Many farming activities have been guided and promoted by following the rules. On the 20th day of January this year comes the Great Cold, which implies the coldest time of the lunar year for some Asian areas. 

 

Dahan, the Great Cold, is the last solar term and means not only the cold weather, but also the upcoming big celebration, the Spring Festival. And certainly, all kinds of hymns have been created by various celebrities throughout the ages, like Tungpo Su, Juyi Bai, etc. Sometimes, no matter how far apart the poets were geographically, they were inspired by the same source.

 

"Endeavour without blaming Heaven, under which we are living.

 Walk with the sight of lively flowers and trees, sharing the boundless spring. "

As an extraordinary poet in China, Tungpo Su, who lived in the Song dynasty, had an aptitude for presenting his emotions and viewpoints through vivid depictions of the scenes. In the poem "The Great Cold Steps In," he described the ordinary people's great cold day, accompanied by the scenery of the warm and hopeful spring, which was not only optimistic but also a wish for the upcoming new year.

 

"Be through my lips to unawaken'd earth.

 The trumpet of a prophecy! Oh, Wind,

 If Winter comes, can Spring be far behind?" 

What a coincidence! The rhesis written by Shelley in "Ode to the West Wind" reveals the same perspective. Although he died short later, his will has finally come true. He was a poet, and a fighter, who never succumbed to any threat, even death! 

Yes, as we all know, there is always a Spring following the Great Cold.

Listen, what made writing difficult?

Many psychologists may have suggested that the best way to start a language learning is to listen, since a large number of researches had been done to present us a picture, in which every predecessor had been born without recognizing any language and learnt to be adept at their mother tongue by listening first. It wouldn't be foreign to imagine the pieces of the indistinct words when you were little. So, as some experts mentioned, listening is the most important method for learning a language. 

Is that all? Definitely not. After we grew up, equipped with both fluent speaking skills and an unobstructed listening capacity, we were required to go to school, completely obligatory. And this is not happened to you and I alone, not just in several specific countries, but globally. What else should we improve continuously besides? A list could have been revealed from the curriculum schedule: English literature, math, chemistry, physics, biology, etc.

When we began our English courses at school, a number of articles written by various authors almost occupied all of our English classes. We read the articles, interpreted the writings, paraphrased the paragraphs, summarized the sentences, and even talked about the significance of each topic. 

Beyond that, our tutors never forget to emphasize the importance of calligraphy first though we can simply maneuver multiple choices by using computers nowadays, hammer home the study of vocabulary, reiterate the promotion of writing skills, and even ask us to recite many of the texts.

A surprise nearby

What does MONDAY mean? It implicates doubtlessly WORK for most adults.

Luckily, it is a sunny Monday here. This is unusual in winter, even for a southern city in China. Snowing made winter for numerous towns and cities in the northern hemisphere, while the north wind robbed the temperature of everybody. Wet and cold air used to condense into dew, to compose the fog and then to confine our activities in the winter mornings. Today, the sunlit horizon lighted up an earlier smile in comparison, led our way to progress. 

The milieu in our office was calm enough to haul me into concentration. Work efficiency is, beyond all doubt, of importance for a long commute time. Completing half of the daily schedule before lunch time gave me a relatively easy afternoon. 

With a light mood, I went for an exploration around our office building after lunch. What an interesting discovery! A huge lake within a delicate garden lies over the other side of the wide road, which was unfortunately hindered by the forests of skyscrapers. There were a lot of kids playing there, old couples strolling hand in hand, adolescents passing by in haste, and some curious heads looking for a refreshing spring, like me.  

Given that most of my lunch time had already been spent, I just lingered for a while, then came back to the office. 

Another roam is around the corner, though I have to guarantee my workload first.  Without much effort, a resort-like place appeared to drive all my stresses and frets away. What a brilliant day!

What's the solution when your computer presents an unknown language unpredictably

What happened on this Friday?

In the morning, I sat in my office, pounded on my keyboard, and went about my business as usual. After scanning the news, I reflected on the topic of my today's article. As I struck the keyboard again, the inputs on the screen of my desktop looked like they had just undergone a plastic surgery, extremely weird. When I realized that there should be something wrong in the language setting after typing repeatedly, I searched for the solution in the way shown below.

1. Typed different letters in both local files and online ones, pointed out that the inputs were definitely another language which I did not add in my computer.

2. Opened "Settings" in the Start Menu, and then chose "Time and Language"

 3. Checked all the settings that might cause the problem and made sure that there were only two languages I added - English and Simplified Chinese. The displayed language on my screen was no doubt another one. 

4. Did anyone else run into such a problem like me, I wondered? Since I presented my question online, numerous comments came to me. This was beyond doubt a bug.

5. I deleted one language of the two, then everything went back to normal right away. As both languages are indispensable, I downloaded a free Input Method Editor instead of using the default one on my computer, because it might go mad unpredictably. After that, my computer seemed as lovable as a little kid, who had just recovered from an illness. I am not sure if this is related to the Friday Effect. Anyhow, it is a practical experience to share with you:)

Like one crucial component of a complex system, our company roles as a creative and practical part, with every talented member working hard. It just takes me less than five minutes to walk from the metro station to our office building every morning. Our current office is on the twelfth floor, the top floor of the whole building. It is comfortable, convenient, and compact, where everyone can work attentively and freely. 

Innovation plays a vital role in our daily work so that we don't lag behind other IT companies. Brilliant ideas always bring about hopeful perspectives and generate even more profits for our firm. So, except for analyzing the trends in the current market, studying the strengths and weaknesses of our competitors, and assessing the opportunities and threats to ourselves, we learn from our work, concentrate on improvements, and create new solutions.

For many people, to invent a software is both exciting and challenging, but patience is the key, to be honest, to complete our daily tasks routinely. A tiny error might cause a large-scale exception, result in doubly workload. Regular inspection and frequent communication seem indispensable. Fortunately, I have a number of congenial peers here, which contributes to relatively high work efficiency, though tiffs are sometimes hard to avoid.

So far, so good! If there is something lucky for everyone around the world, having a satisfactory job should be one of the top ten. And what's more, there is a crowd of people nearby trying their best to accomplish the same goal.

How to attain all your goals this year?

Take myself as an example, there are more than ten objectives for me to reach, while I cannot complete them all at once. Therefore, I have to set priorities for each of them. Which one do you want to achieve the most? Can we simply place each of them in a different month?

First step: Sort your goals 

Actually, most of my friends or colleagues chose to sort their objectives by time. For instance, my brother set his monthly goals last year. Besides, we can order our wishes through our enthusiasm. I really wanted to watch a live show by a famous band and set this event, of course, as the most important case for me this year. In addition, we can set priorities for distinct places, individuals, and other factors. Whatever ways you prefer, please sort them out and write them down clearly when you get time.

Second step: make a detailed plan for each goal

Now we have our objectives. We need to find solutions for each of them. This is crucial for achieving final success. During the process, we can find the flaws in our original ideas. We might wish to watch a live show of one of our favorite celebrities, but would soon discover that he doesn't have dates available this year. Beyond that, we'd better make a clear list of how to reach each objective, including specific time frames and locations, what resources we need, and whether there is any help from others required.

Third step: Inspecting

Do not check your schedule at the end of this year. After planning, please set a clock when you should have finished a tiny task. There must be various changes during the actual process, as no one can predict everything in advance accurately. We can adjust our schedule during our implementation to guarantee our dream's coming true. If you can not supervise yourself at all, just look for a partner or join a group of peers so that you will remind each other about the schedules.

What should we do right now?

 If there are 24 books awaited, we have to finish reading two of them within one month. That means, we need to complete one book every two weeks. Now, let's set a clock and get start.
